A modern Gurukula
Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning was founded to inculcate ethical and moral values in students. These ethics and morals form the undercurrent of every subject taught at the University. Here, the development of a student’s character is just as important as imparting knowledge. Visit our Vision, Mission & Philosophy page to learn more about the unique model of Sri Sathya Sai Values-based education.
This holistic development of students can only be possible in an environment that encourages the development of the student’s mind, body and spirit.
To facilitate this, the University has a compulsory residential policy for all students. The environment is similar to the ancient Indian gurukula system of education, in a modern context. Teachers and students live and grow together in an atmosphere of mutual trust and unity.
Most students typically spend between two to five years pursuing an education at SSSIHL. As a result, what differentiates them from graduates of other universities is the transformation of their hearts, not just the training of their minds.
Educare
This transformation (of students, teachers and staff) has been the guiding principle right from the inception, when Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning integrated ethics and values as the undercurrent of every subject taught at the University. Combined with academic and research excellence, the University provides a holistic framework of inter-personal development for its students. Its compulsory residential character trains the mind, body and spirit of the student in an environment similar to the ancient Indian ‘gurukula’ system of education, in the most modern context.
How does this work in practice?
The University strives at every level to blend the academic (secular) aspects of learning with that of character building (spiritual), as depicted in the Temple of Learning diagram. This helps students develop a wholesome and balanced personality, one where academic competence is supplemented with good character.
In addition, a handful of teachers voluntarily stay with students at the hostel on a full-time basis. As facilitators and mentors, teachers set an example by following the Sri Sathya Sai Values-based Integral Education as laid out by the Revered Founder Chancellor. See our Residential Teachers page for further details.
